CWA District 1 Healthcare Coordinating Council

The Healthcare Coordinating Council has been formed to support healthcare Locals within the CWA District 1. The Council's main objective is to bring together CWA healthcare worker Locals to discuss problems in the workplace and to cooperatively develop solutions to the ever-changing workplace.

Benefits

You can call on support from the Healthcare Coordinating Council to address issues related to:

  • Health and Safety
  • Contracts
  • Collective Bargaining Research
  • Organizing
  • Education
  • Political Action
  • Communication
  • Mobilization

Legislation

We will keep you updated on the latest legislation news in areas that concern Healthcare workers such as:  Legislation that will mandate safe staffing standards in your facility.  Short staffing puts both the patients and the nurses at risk. Only through legislation can we ensure adequate staffing and patient safety. .  This truly demonstrates the role of unions in the healthcare arena and how they enable us to actively work as advocates for our patients and our profession.

Workplace Issues

Adequate staffing is the number one issue among nurses around the country and has long been the focus of reform and lobbying efforts by the CWA and other labor organizations.  Many hospitals have too few nurses caring for too many patients, leading to thousands of preventable patient deaths and injuries. Many nurses are leaving the profession due to inadequate/unsafe staffing levels.

Organizing

We must continue to mobilize and educate our members and organize the unorganized within our industry and encourage others to do the same. There's power in numbers and with the clout of the CWA membership behind you, we can change the system in a way that ensures that the money will be there for higher pay and benefits and safer working conditions for all of you.

The Healthcare Coordinating Council will strive to provide an approach to dealing with change, including a need for an internal union program for legislative actions, political connections, research, analysis, communication, mobilization and organizing.
